Altar of Saint Joaquin and Saint Anne
At the head of the Epistola nave there is the sculptural group of Saint Joaquin with Saint Anne and the Virgin, impressive full-length sculptures that some have attributed to Pedro Roldan around 1670, while others point to Francisco Antonio Ruiz Gijón, although it is not yet possible to prove their authorship. Nevertheless, the forms clearly belong to Pedro Roldan’s circle. This group of sculptures comes from the convent of the Discalced Carmelites of Los Remedios, and was restored in 2021.
On the wall next to the main altar there are two interesting small paintings. They represent the Blessed Souls in Purgatory and Saint Millán of la Cogolla. On the opposite wall there is an oil painting by Rufina García Montalván depicting Our Lady of La O. The upper part of the work is bordered by two angels and three cherubs, illuminated by the golden light emanating from the head of the Virgin. In the lower part there is a cloud with the heads of three angels on which the Virgin stands. She appears pregnant and looks towards the book she holds in her hands.
The Virgin of La O wears a rich white tunic of silver fabric over a red velvet cloak trimmed and lined with ermine. This cloak was donated in 1853 by the Infanta María Luisa Fernanda de Borbón, Duchess of Montpensier, second daughter of King Ferdinand VII and sister of Queen Isabel II.
